The “After Dark Files” folder can be located in the Control Panels, Extensions, or Preferences folders, the System Folder, or even on the desktop. (For Systems earlier than 7.0, it must be in the System Folder.)
Sound:
• After Dark sound requires System 6.0.3 or later.
• Applications such as HyperCard or music programs want control over sound. If such an application is open, After Dark functions silently until you change applications.
• Utilities like ClickChange or SoundMaster can play periodic background sounds. If such a sound interrupts After Dark, the After Dark sound may not return until the next time it goes to sleep. To avoid this, disable that utility’s background sound. This does not apply to electronic mail or alarm programs with alert sounds, because they wake up After Dark.
• Talking Moose (version 3.0): With System 6.0.7 or later, if the Moose speaks while an After Dark module is playing sound, the system may crash. To avoid this, turn “Speak after Pauses” off in the Moose control panel, or upgrade to Talking Moose version 3.1.0, which fixes the problem.
Quicken 1.5:
For Quicken to work properly with After Dark under MultiFinder, it needs a bit more application memory than usual. To do this, select the Quicken application’s icon, then select “Get Info” from the File menu. Quicken’s “Suggested Memory Size” is 375 K, but enter 400 in the “Application Memory Size” field.
FileMaker II/Pro, Quicken 1.5, possibly others:
These applications reserve all available memory for themselves while they’re open. As a result, a few After Dark modules, like Fish, MultiModule, and Logo, which need a little more memory than the rest, can’t get enough memory and won’t run. This problem does not occur under MultiFinder.
Microsoft Mail (version 2.0):
If After Dark’s sound is on when MS Mail plays the incoming mail “Sound chime,” the system may crash. To avoid this, turn the incoming mail “Sound chime” preference off, or upgrade to MS Mail 3.0.
